Arianna Cristiano, born in Rome, is a Design Director at illo. After studying Graphic Design and Photography, her desire to develop an interdisciplinary approach to visual communication led her to dive into digital illustration and move to Turin in 2016. Her work is defined by a strong use of pop-infused abstraction, expressed through colour, geometry, and visual synthesis — with a touch of irony and irreverence.

At Illo, she pushes the creative direction of projects, always challenging herself and the team across new styles and techniques, turning each one into an opportunity to grow. Over the course of her journey from Intern to Design Director, she has collaborated with a range of internationally renowned clients, including Google, Meta, Apple, Snapchat, Samsung, Storytel, Airbnb, and Vibram. She has been a speaker at Blend, Motion Motion, and Design Bomb 2, and her work has been featured in publications such as Mindsparkle Mag, It’s Nice That, and The Brand Identity.

the talk

Burn the Guidelines. Kill the System.

LANGUAGE: ITALIAN

Motion design is not about making things move. It's about making things make sense — and making people feel something. After designing more than twenty illustration systems, we realized systems alone are not enough.

Brands don't need more guidelines. They need visual languages: bold, flexible, and alive — built on just few core principles. Drawing from work with Google, Meta, Samsung, Apple, Bloomberg, and innovative startups, Ilenia Notarangelo reveals how illo's approach evolved from rigid design systems to dynamic visual languages. Through 15-person international team operating from Turin, Italy, illo translates complex concepts into clear, accessible storytelling using minimal, colorful aesthetic rooted in Italian design masters (Munari, Sottsass, Vignelli) combined with contemporary illustration and international animation. Work awarded by Art Directors Club and Awwwards demonstrates how bold color palettes, visual synthesis, and clear concepts create emotional connections beyond functional specifications. For designers, art directors, and brand managers tired of endless guidelines that constrain rather than enable, this talk offers framework for building visual languages that breathe, adapt, and resonate. Because design systems should amplify creativity, not suffocate it. Burn the guidelines. Kill the system. Build visual languages that make people feel.
